McIlroy poised for contention at PGA

SHEBOYGAN, Wis. — Defending PGA champion Rory McIlroy answered any lingering questions about his ailing left ankle during first-round play Thursday at the PGA Championship.

Knocking down a few more putts would have made him feel even better.

Paired with Masters and U.S. Open winner Jordan Spieth and British Open champion Zach Johnson, McIlroy got around the wind-swept links at Whistling Straits with a round of 1-under-par 71, sitting in 25th place, five strokes behind leader Dustin Johnson. Spieth, the other half of golf's youthful dynamic duo, also shot 71.
