Los Angeles Moves Ahead With Bid to Host 2024 Olympics

LOS ANGELES — After a week of delays over concerns about the potential costs to taxpayers, this city of Los Angeles is moving forward with its bid to host the 2024 Olympic Games.

The City Council voted, 15-0, on Tuesday to authorize Mayor Eric Garcetti to sign an agreement with the United States Olympic Committee over bidding for the Games, clearing the path for Los Angeles to become the country’s official bidder. The city has been negotiating with the U.S.O.C., and the two sides had hoped to reach an agreement by this week.

In moving ahead with an Olympic bid, Los Angeles is now throwing itself into a contest — alongside Paris, Rome, Hamburg and Budapest — that some cities have grown increasingly hesitant to enter in recent years, as the financial pitfalls of hosting the Games have become more apparent.
