Let the Waiting Begin: Calling Pitches, Slowly, in College Baseball

OMAHA, Neb. — The shadows stretched from the first-base stands toward the mound late Sunday as Texas Christian took on Florida at the College World Series. As each batter stepped in for the Horned Frogs, Gators catcher Mike Rivera settled into his crouch and glanced left, toward the third base dugout. There, Florida Coach Kevin O’Sullivan studied the laminated chart in his hands while Rivera waited.

And waited. And waited.

Glancing up, O’Sullivan raised his left hand and signaled with his fingers, code for the type of pitch and location he wanted Rivera to call. Rivera checked the numbers against a chart strapped to his left forearm and put down the signs for pitcher Alex Faedo.
