Sydney Leroux is just days away from her first World Cup — however, her road to the U.S. Women’s National Team has not been an easy one.
In the above video from espnW‘s “What Makes Us” series, the striker opens up about the challenges she faced after moving from Canada to Arizona at age 14 to pursue her dream of playing for the United States.
“Arizona was probably the most difficult for me because I didn’t fit in at all. No one really knew my story … I really grew up in a white community … I never understood the other part of me, which is obviously being black … I dealt with all the adversity by playing soccer.
