WASHINGTON — Gerrit Cole, Justin Verlander and Zack Greinke have combined for 17 All-Star selections, 524 victories, roughly 7,000 strikeouts and more than $500 million in career earnings. All were among the best pitchers in the majors this season, so they started the first three games of this World Series for the Houston Astros.

Naturally, then, the first Astros starter to earn a win was … Jose Urquidy, a rookie from Mexico who twirled five shutout innings Saturday night as the Astros evened the World Series with an 8-1 victory in Game 4 at Nationals Park.
