It's unclear if this former Notre Dame star will be ready for the NFL season

Former Notre Dame tight end Tommy Tremble has undergone back surgery.

Tremble, now playing in the NFL for the Carolina Panthers, is expected to be rehabbing during training camp and he will be placed on the physically unable to perform list. It's unclear when he will be ready for game action.

It's an unfortunate situation for a young player -- Tremble is just 25 -- but it does seem like there's a chance he'll be ready for regular-season games.

Tremble was selected by the Panthers in the third round of the NFL Draft in 2021 and he's had 85 catches for 782 yards and nine touchdowns in his four pro seasons.
