Illinois football still a mess, but maybe there's a vision in place

Illinois fired coach Bill Cubit on Saturday, just 98 days after removing his interim tag and six days before spring practice. Illinois, as it's been, is a mess.

Cubit took over as head coach after the school fired Tim Beckman for fudging injury reports just days before the 2015 season. He received a two-year deal worth $2.4 million in November. New athletic director Josh Whitman announced Cubit's dismissal Saturday during his first official day as AD.

The extension of Cubit and timing of all this shows there's still plenty of dysfunction. But maybe it's for the best.
