How the Nationals Won Game 1 of the World Series

Timely singles, heads-up base-running and a few mammoth home runs powered the Washington Nationals to a 5-4 victory over the Houston Astros in Game 1 of the World Series.

In a series expected to be decided by starting pitchers, Houston jumped to a quick 2-0 lead in the first inning on a double by Yuli Gurriel, a seemingly daunting development for the Nationals considering the Astros had Gerrit Cole, who had not lost since May 22, on the mound.

But Ryan Zimmerman, the infielder who joined the Nationals in 2005 — their first year in Washington after 36 seasons in Montreal — got his team on the board in the second inning with a solo homer in his first World Series at-bat.
