Highlights From the 50th New York City Marathon: Kenyans Dominate as the City Celebrates

Peres Jepchirchir won the women’s race and Albert Korir led the men, a year after the marathon was canceled because of the pandemic. Marking a jubilant return, some 30,000 competitors made the 26.2-mile journey across the five boroughs.

The runners gathered in early morning darkness on Staten Island. They ran past confetti cannons in Brooklyn and a heavy metal band in Queens. And after being cheered along in the South Bronx, they raced down through Manhattan and ended in Central Park, where volunteers welcomed them with medals and supporters clapped from grandstands.
