Hearing will determine if Mateen Cleaves will be tried in sexual-assault case

Former Michigan State basketball star Mateen Cleaves is due in court Tuesday in Flint, Mich., for a hearing in a sexual-assault case against him, the Detroit Free Press reported.

The preliminary examination in 67th District Court will determine if the case proceeds to trial.

Cleaves, 38, is accused of sexually assaulting a 24-year-old woman in a motel near Flint in 2015. Prosecutors say Cleaves met the woman at a golf outing in September, had drinks with her and took her to the motel, where they allege he kept her against her will.

Cleaves, who faces numerous felony charges that are punishable by up to 15 years in prison, maintains he is innocent.
