Gerrit Cole Leads Astros Past Yankees in Game 3

Ben Solomon for The New York Times

Gerrit Cole threw seven shutout innings, Houston got runs from both the long ball and some small ball, and the Astros took a two-games-to-one lead in the American League Championship Series with a 4-1 win over the Yankees on Tuesday.

Cole outlasted and outmatched the Yankees’ ace, Luis Severino, allowing four hits while striking out seven and walking five. Severino was good — allowing two runs, both on solo homers, while striking out six in four and one-third innings — but not nearly good enough to match the combination of Cole and the Astros’ bullpen.
