Free-agent fans: Do allegiances change when favorite players leave?

Like many others, I inherited my love of sports from my parents, especially my father. Although my father cheered the Washington Redskins, Boston Red Sox and Celtics, as a very young child in the 1960s I became enthralled with the St. Louis Cardinals (Lou Brock, Bob Gibson, Curt Flood) and the Green Bay Packers (Bart Starr, Ray Nitschke, Carroll Dale).

My fandom with the NBA began later with the Boston Celtics, then the Chicago Bulls, and now the Charlotte Hornets — the latter of which I am a season ticket holder. My favorite players were Larry Bird and Michael Jordan.
