For Aaron Nola in Debut, an Odd Baseball First

With more than a century of baseball history, it is not often that you see something that has never happened before.

The Philadelphia Phillies’ highly touted pitching prospect Aaron Nola had a dream debut Tuesday night, in a way. Nola, 22, showed he was major league ready, pitching six innings and giving up just one run and five hits.

But his gem was not enough. The punchless Phillies were shut out by the Tampa Bay Rays, and Nola had to start his career 0-1.

Nola was the collegiate pitcher of the year at Louisiana State before being selected seventh over all by the Phillies in 2014.
