Exaggerator Wins Preakness Stakes, Denying Nyquist Chance at Triple Crown

BALTIMORE — Exaggerator held off Cherry Wine by three and a half lengths to win the Preakness Stakes and deny the Kentucky Derby winner Nyquist the second leg of the Triple Crown on a rainy Saturday at Pimlico Race Course.

Exaggerator, ridden by Kent Desormeaux and trained by his brother Keith, completed the mile-and-three-sixteenths in 1 minute 58.31 seconds and paid $7.20 on a $2 bet to win.

Nyquist— the 3-5 favorite — was third.

Nyquist, the 2-year-old champion, had won the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile, the Florida Derby, and the Kentucky Derby while compiling an 8-0 record and pushing his earnings to $4.
