Dustin Johnson’s Dream Turns Real on No. 18, Then Nightmare Sets In

UNIVERSITY PLACE, Wash. — Dustin Johnson walked arm in arm with his fiancée Sunday night toward the players’ locker room, and a swift exit from Chambers Bay Golf Course. Up the hill, the award celebration for the 115th United States Open was taking place without Johnson, who had tied for second with Louis Oosthuizen, one stroke behind the champion, Jordan Spieth.

An empty chair separated Oosthuizen and Spieth. The seat was reserved for Johnson, but after he missed a 12-foot putt for eagle and a win on the last hole and pulled the 4-foot comebacker that would have forced an 18-hole playoff with Spieth, all he wanted to do was disappear.
