In five seasons, center Derek Stepan has developed into a locker-room leader and big-game player for the Rangers. But when Stepan became a restricted free agent July 1, he and the team struggled to find common ground.
Hours before the Rangers and Stepan were supposed to have an arbitration hearing in Toronto on Monday, the two sides agreed on a long-term contract.
Reports indicate Stepan’s deal is for six years and $39 million.
Stepan, 25, who was named an alternate captain before last season, is coming off a 55-point season, which was abbreviated by a broken leg sustained in training camp.
