Denny Hamlin, five-time Martinsville winner, crashes out early in STP 500

RIDGEWAY, Va. — Denny Hamlin saw his quest for a sixth Grandfather Clock come to an end Sunday in the STP 500 at Martinsville Speedway.

Running in fifth place and entering Turn 1, Hamlin wheel-hopped on Lap 221 of the 500 lap-race, sending his car into the wall and heavily damaging the right rear.

The damage would prove unrepairable. Hamlin would finish 39th of 40 cars in the field. The only driver to finish worse, Aric Almirola, lasted 206 laps before engine failure.
