Coyotes Await Key Vote on Arena Deal in Glendale

The Arizona Coyotes’ stormy relationship with the city of Glendale may take another turn Wednesday when the City Council votes on whether to cancel its lease agreement with the team at Gila River Arena.

At issue is the performance of the arena, which is owned by the city and leased to the team. In 2013, the city agreed to pay IceArizona, the team’s ownership group, $15 million a year for 15 years to run the building in return for a share of the naming rights and other revenue.

The deal was meant to help the city keep the troubled team in Glendale while giving the new Coyotes owners a chance to improve the team’s finances.
