Court Blocks Strike in Spanish Soccer

A planned players’ strike in Spanish soccer was suspended Thursday by the country’s national court, allowing matches to proceed on schedule this weekend and positioning Barcelona to win La Liga Sunday with a victory at Atlético de Madrid.

The strike had been called by the players’ union, with the backing of the Spanish soccer federation, as part of a long power struggle over who should benefit from the lucrative television rights for Spanish soccer. The government recently drafted a new law introducing collective bargaining for the television rights, with the support of the national soccer league that runs Spain’s top professional divisions.
