C.J. Spiller released by Saints; team taking another hefty cap hit

The Saints waived C.J. Spiller on Tuesday after the veteran running back was inactive for the team's 35-34 loss to the Raiders on Sunday.

The club is taking a significant salary cap hit with the move; it will add $4.5 million in "dead money" this year and $2.5 million next year. A first-round pick, ninth overall, by the Bills in 2010, Spiller spent five seasons with that team before joining the Saints last year on a four-year, $18 million contract that included $9 million guaranteed.

While quarterback Drew Brees restructured his contract to help ease the team's salary cap pains, the Saints now have $40.
