SANTIAGO, Chile — Fans of the host nation at the Copa América were set on edge when Arturo Vidal, the tournament’s leading scorer and the star midfielder for Chile, was arrested for driving under the influence after he smashed his red Ferrari on Tuesday night.
Vidal’s car was shown on national television with most of the driver’s side destroyed. Local news media reports said the car collided with another vehicle and that Vidal escaped with minor injuries, but a police colonel, Ricardo Gonzalez, said Vidal’s wife, who was a passenger in his car, had injuries that were “moderately serious,” the reports said.
