BOSTON — The New York Yankees will not pay Alex Rodriguez a $6 million bonus for hitting his historic 660th home run, Yankees GM Brian Cashman said Saturday, a decision that's expected to lead to a legal feud with their slugger.
"We always honor our contracts," Cashman said, in the Yankees' first public statement on Rodriguez's marketing bonuses. "If we're obligated to do something we always do it. If we're not obligated to do something, don't create a circumstance which looks we're not following obligations.
"We're going to follow the contract, like we follow all contracts. So there is no dispute, from our perspective.
