WASHINGTON — The light behind Henrik Lundqvist flashed red, the same color as the wardrobe of all those fans screaming and stomping their feet, the same color jerseys as the Washington Capitals celebrating along the boards by the Rangers’ bench.
While some Rangers bowed their heads, there was almost a full period to play in their most important game of their season. Though that reality proffered hope, it also meant the Rangers had to figure out how to score against a Washington team that streaked around the ice like fire ants, a nuisance in every sense.
