British Open Friday Updates: Englishman Danny Willett Takes Lead

On the second day of the British Open, many early players were again lighting up the forgiving St. Andrews course, buttrickier conditions semed to be looming.

After an extended delay for heavy rain and lightning, play started a little after 10 a.m. local time, 5 Eastern. The softened greens proved amenable to birdies, at least for the early players.

The early leader was Danny Willett, a 27-year-old Englishman, who is second in this year’s European Tour rankings but has never finished in the Top 10 at a major. Willett had four birdies in his first 10 holes to stand at 10 under, three shots ahead of the field.
