Boston fan hurt by bat in 'serious' condition

Boston (AFP) - A woman injured when a piece of a broken baseball bat flew into the stands at Boston's Fenway Park on Friday was in serious condition in hospital on Saturday.

Tonya Carpenter was admitted to hospital with "life-threatening" injuries on Friday, according to the Boston Police Department.

She had been sitting with her husband and young son at the game between the Red Sox and the Oakland Athletics and was struck in the head in the second inning when A's batter Brett Lawrie shattered his bat and a large chunk flew into the second row of the stands between home plate and the dugout

"Tonya Carpenter was admitted to Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center last night following injury at Fenway Park," a statement released through the hospital said Saturday.
