As N.F.L. Prepares for Longer Extra Points, C.F.L. Offers a Preview

MONTREAL — Boris Bede, the rookie kicker of the Montreal Alouettes in the Canadian Football League, made league history on June 25 when he launched the first rule-mandated 32-yard extra point.

The ball went wide left.

“Sure did,” Bede said with a laugh after a recent practice. “I want you to understand it was the first one, the very first one. Guess I’ll be remembered for that.”

He should also be remembered for what happened later. In the second quarter, Bede hit a 32-yarder and became the first player to make a convert, as it is called in Canada, under new C.
