Aroldis Chapman contract represents backward thinking by Yankees

Have fun paying your closer $17 million a year, Yankees. You're doing it wrong.

The Bronx Bombers wanted Aroldis Chapman badly enough to give him $86 million over the next five years; the agreement was reported late Wednesday. It would appear they're not on board with the emerging philosophy of having one's best reliever regularly pitch in innings other than the ninth.

Why does it appear that way? Because such an investment is a signal that Chapman will be treated strictly as a one-inning closer, and not as a "bullpen ace" like former teammate Andrew Miller ("You're not going to pay a guy THAT much to work the seventh!
