Alex Ovechkin could have quit when he was dropped to the third line. He didn’t.

With the Capitals trailing 3 games to 1 in their series against the Pittsburgh Penguins, Capitals coach Barry Trotz made the decision to move Alex Ovechkin from the first line to the third line. It was revealed by beat writers at the Capitals practice before Game 5, who were somewhat stunned to see Ovie skate out onto the ice in a white jersey, the jersey that denotes that a player is on the third unit.

With the face of the franchise now anchoring the third group, the Capitals went and won two games straight, including a 5-2 smack down of the Penguins in Game 6 in Pittsburgh, setting this all up for a pivotal Game 7 on Wednesday night in what has been the series of the playoffs.
