Abby Wambach Says U.S. Would Be Scoring More on Grass

Abby Wambach caused a stir at the Women’s World Cup over the weekend when she told reporters that the United States would have scored more goals in its first two games if the tournament was not being played on artificial turf.

The United States has three goals in its first two games, and Wambach, the leading scorer in women’s soccer history, has none. After practice on Saturday, she blamed the artificial turf at Winnipeg Stadium for costing the team at least one goal in Friday’s scoreless tie with Sweden, but also for two other missed chances in the Americans’ opening game against Australia last Monday.
