The San Francisco 49ers placed wide receiver Bruce Ellington on season-ending injured reserve Tuesday after he tore a hamstring muscle last Friday.
Ellington, 25, missed the team's second preseason game with an ankle injury. He has dealt with ankle and hamstring injuries throughout his two-year career.
In a corresponding move, the 49ers traded with the Detroit Lions for wide receiver Jeremy Kerley to add depth and give them a viable slot option.
New 49ers coach Chip Kelly had lauded Ellington's abilities during camp, setting him up for a breakout campaign on offense after he had played mostly on special teams his first two seasons.
