SANTA CLARA, Calif. — Jim Tomsula had spent the better part of an hour cracking jokes between forkfuls of pulled pork from a to-go box filled down the hall in the San Francisco 49ers’ cafeteria.
In the office he thinks is too big, with the brown leather furniture he didn’t pick out, in his seventh month on the head coaching job he swears he never aspired to attain, Tomsula seemed strikingly comfortable. Confident even, considering how little everyone seems to expect from a roster that lost some big names and a coach who still feels the need to say his to people he meets.
