Why do college basketball teams take foreign trips every four years?

SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico — Tre’Shaun Fletcher still talks to his former teammates about their 2017 trip to Italy.

The University of Toledo took an 11-day trip across the country that can be best described as extravagant and once-in-a-lifetime.

“The one thing that’s absolutely awesome about it — and coach [Tod Kowalczyk] has been really good about this — is that it’s more fun and not as much about basketball,” said UT assistant Jordan Lauf, who traveled to Greece in 2013 as a freshman and Italy in 2017 as a graduate assistant.

The 2022-23 Rockets are enjoying the sights and sounds of Puerto Rico this week, whether it’s at their oceanfront resort or aboard the El Kraken, a 46-foot boat that transported them around the Caribbean Sea.
