UT's Candle reflects on family, a charmed football life, and a harrowing 2020

Jason Candle, a recent college graduate and aspiring future coach, stood in the 14th fairway at Sleepy Hollow Country Club in Alliance, Ohio, during the summer of 2003 when his phone rang.

Larry Kehres, the legendary Mount Union coach, was on the other end. He had a question for his former wide receiver: What are you doing this fall? Candle told him he wanted to be a graduate assistant. In reality, the 23-year-old had no plan. He did want to coach, though.

So Kehres made him an offer.

“I can pay you next to nothing. You coach the wideouts.
