During his career at Mount Union, where wide receiver Jason Candle knew nothing but winning, a defensive back who tried to cover him in practice had a strong connection to the University of Toledo.
Alex Grinch’s uncle, Gary Pinkel, was the program’s all-time winningest coach.
Twenty-five years later, Grinch’s buddy has surpassed Uncle Gary.
“I’ve always had a tremendous amount of respect for the program,” Candle said. “I always knew about the success they had in the ‘90s and early 2000s. Alex was also paying attention to this place.”
The first inkling that Candle might one day become a coach came at Mount Union.
