The Mid-American Conference women’s basketball tournament was off to a dubious start for the University of Toledo after one quarter of play on Monday at Savage Arena, but a decisive second quarter and a lockdown defensive effort the rest of the game helped the Rockets to a 65-37 victory over Akron.
The No. 6 seed Rockets were getting all they could handle from the No. 11 seed Akron early on and trailed 16-15 after the opening quarter.
An 18-2 second quarter advantage, however, erased any doubt that surrounded the first round tournament matchup. Toledo limited the Zips to 1-of-13 shooting in the quarter on the way to a 33-18 halftime lead.
