LEXINGTON, Ky. — The preseason hype about the University of Toledo fell down a Kentucky mineshaft Saturday afternoon.
The touchdown underdog Rockets came to Lexington planning to win and put the first touches on a playoff-worthy resume. National pundits spoke glowingly of UT all summer, and Kirk Herbstreit added to the hoopla on College GameDay when he picked Toledo to beat Kentucky.
The Rockets had numerous opportunities at Kroger Field to capitalize on the chatter. Instead, turnovers, short-yardage gaffes, and second-guessed playcalls contributed to a 24-16 loss to the Wildcats.
“We gave ourselves a chance to maybe put ourselves in position to win the game, we just didn’t make the plays,” Toledo coach Jason Candle said.
