The Macomber High School star enlisted in the Marines after high school, receiving a Bronze Star and Navy Cross for his 13 months in Vietnam. Long was part of the Battle of Vin Huey, an eight-hour battle in which 70 percent of US troops were wounded or killed. He was wounded but continued to fight.
