Northern Illinois-Toledo on Wednesday night matched a team from the flattest state of the heartland that’s headed for the Mountain West and one from the summit of the statistical mountain that’s in the middle of the Mid-American Conference pack.

Beneath a full moon, an energized Glass Bowl crowd of 22,128 and a national TV audience got a look at two of the great oddities of the gridiron universe, and, as the hometown newspaper, we’ll focus on the strangest one.
