Briggs: An appreciation of Toledo football coach Jason Candle

When Jason Candle moved into town in 2009, he figured he was just passing through.

He was 29 and single and the new slot receivers and tight ends coach at the University of Toledo. After six seasons as an assistant at his alma mater, Mount Union, the job represented a foot in the revolving door of big-time college football — the first of what promised to be many stops on a wandering road. Candle rented an apartment by Franklin Park Mall.

“Jumping from Division III to Division I, it’s a leap of faith,” he said. “You don’t know how it’s going to go.
