Why have targeting calls gotten so poor and why?

Texas Tech defensive back Jah’Shawn Johnson has become one of Texas Tech’s biggest playmakers on a defense that sorely needs them this season.

Saturday, he never got that opportunity.

With 8:38 remaining in the second quarter, Johnson wrapped up Oklahoma State receiver David Glidden. But, Johnson tackled him by his shoulder pads and as a result it looked like their helmets might have grazed.

It was ruled targeting on the field, and then upheld after review, despite Johnson’s helmet not really appearing to make contact with Glidden’s.
