The first book Tubby Smith ever read was ‘They Call Me Coach,’ by John Wooden.
“I had him autograph it years ago,” the Texas Tech coach said. “Then we had a chance to be the inaugural first team to play in the first inaugural John Wooden Classic in Anaheim, California, when I was in Kentucky. A lot of firsts. I’d see him at all the Final Fours, just a great man. Not just a great coach but a great man.”
Smith was recently announced as the recipient for the 2016 John R. Wooden “Legends of Coaching” award.
