One of the greatest things about college football is the collective identity that fanbases take. There’s a unifying element to sports (they are one of the best storytelling mediums in all of the universe because of this) and it’s so easy for fanbases to embrace a somewhat healthy tribalism among all of their members.
Teams know this. It’s one reason they lean into branding, promoting specific messaging, embracing certain slogans and cultural elements. It’s all fantastic and bizarre and can be a ton of fun to sit back and examine.
It’s why you’ll see folks wearing essentially the same thing to their favorite team’s college football games, even if they aren’t in a uniform on the sideline.
