When Ja’Deion High ran to an open spot and caught a 31-yard pass on third-and-30 last week, Texas Tech wide receivers coach Darrin Chiaverini wasn’t surprised.
Otherwise, he wouldn’t have had High in the starting lineup. Nor would he have put him in as a starter for the season opener.
Chiaverini stopped being surprised by the walk-on wide receiver from Hereford weeks ago — actually, months ago, probably. He’s said for quite some time he trusted High.
“He’s got a lot of football savvy,” Chiaverini said this week. “That’s something that’s in you as a player, not something that you necessarily can coach.
