Texas Tech junior first baseman Eric Gutierrez is set to return to Omaha on July 2 as one of four announced participants for the event that starts at 7:30 p.m. on ESPN.
A year ago, Gutierrez set a TD Ameritrade College Home Run Derby record with 52 home runs.
The previous mark of 20 was set by Rice’s Michael Aquino in 2013.
Gutierrez had 15 home runs in the first round alone and added 19 in the second round to advance to the finals against Texas catcher and former Sharyland High School teammate Tres Barrera.
Gutierrez belted 18 home runs, seven shy of Barrera’s total to finish in second place.
