ARLINGTON -- As Texas Tech’s Matt Wells enters his debut first within the fraternity of Big 12 football head coaches, not all of his colleagues come as complete strangers.
Certainly not TCU head coach Gary Patterson.
The first-year Red Raiders head coach noted during day one of Big 12 Media Days Monday that he and Patterson have ties that date back to his freshman year of college at Utah State in 1993 -- right when Patterson was still serving as the school’s defensive backs coach.
And with both coaches working their way up through the ranks of the mid-majors to the Power-5 -- Wells arriving at Tech from his alma mater -- the respect that Wells has for Patterson runs deep.
