Opinion: The on-field product will suffer, but Everett Withers made the right choice in dismissing three wide receivers

He realizes that first and foremost, fans want to see their team win ball games — and more importantly, you all want to win now. He admitted as much the first day he walked through the door at Bobcat Stadium.

“Fans don’t want to wait,” Withers said at his introductory press conference on Jan. 7. “I get it, I understand it, I’ve lived it.”

But, here’s the kicker, and this may be hard to hear: Winning now doesn’t mean sacrificing what you believe in — no matter the cost.

So you see when three of Texas State’s top wide receivers (Justin Gamble, Brice Gunter and Demun Mercer) violated team rules or more accurately didn’t live up to the program’s “core values and failed to meet expectations in other areas,” Withers had no choice.
