At this point, the unexpected seems expected when Jonathan Ortega is on the baseball diamond.
Take his first collegiate at-bat for example.
Ortega, entrenched as Texas State’s lead-off hitter on opening day, waited two pitches to make a statement.
That statement – a solo home run to left field that began his Division I collegiate career – meant something more than the run it created.
It meant that Ortega had arrived.
Through the first month of the season, Ortega has blurred the line between reality and fantasy. And, perhaps most encouraging for the program, he’s just a freshman.
