Rangers trade catcher Brett Nicholas to San Diego for player to be named or cash

The Texas Rangers have traded catcher Brett Nicholas to the San Diego Padres in exchange for a player to be named or cash considerations, the team announced Friday afternoon.

Nicholas, 29, was drafted by the Rangers in the sixth round of the 2010 MLB draft. He had returned to the organization in March one week after being designated for assignment. Nicholas cleared outright waivers at the time and received an outright assignment to Triple-A Round Rock.

The catcher position recently became a little crowded for the Rangers when they signed Plano's Cameron Rupp to a minor league contract Tuesday.
