Rangers pitcher Nick Martinez undergoes surgery to repair sports hernia

ORLANDO, Fla. -- Nick Martinez, who has made 68 starts over the past four years for the Rangers, underwent sports hernia surgical repair in Philadelphia, the club announced Monday.

The surgery was performed by Dr. William Meyers, the same surgeon who repaired a sports hernia for Elvis Andrus last November. The club expects Martinez to have a full recovery by the start of spring training.

That may be slightly optimistic, though. Andrus did not play in a game this past spring until March 11, two weeks into the exhibition schedule. The Rangers purposely took it slow with Andrus, partly because they had a longer-than-usual spring training schedule.
