Jimmy Herget signed, Scott Heineman DFA’d

The Texas Rangers have signed pitcher Jimmy Herget to a major league contract, the team announced today. To make room for Herget on the 40 man roster, the Rangers have designated outfielder Scott Heineman for assignment.

This is kind of weird, because both Herget and Heineman were non-tendered earlier this month, presumably in order to get them off the 40 man roster so they could be re-signed to minor league deals without risking losing them on waiver claims.

Jon Heyman says that Herget re-signed for $700,000, which is more than he would have made, I believe, if he had stayed with the Rangers — he’s not arbitration-eligible, and the Rangers’ payscale for players with his service time would be around $590,000, I think.
